Vernissage du livre Lav Diaz : Faire face
This collective work, co-edited by Corinne Maury (University of Toulouse) and Olivier Zuchuat (Department of Cinema, HEAD-Geneva) extends the Lav Diaz colloquium organized in 2019 at the HEAD-Geneva. This 350-page book, rich in images, is the first in French devoted to the work of Lav Diaz. It brings together contributions from researchers and film critics, a film diary, as well as unpublished interviews.
Lav Diaz’s cinematographic work is steeped in the hopes and sufferings of a Filipino people exposed to both state violence and the climatic disasters that regularly devastate the archipelago. His river-films are tied to the destiny of the opponents, the marginalized and the disenfranchised.
Facing history and the tragic consequences of successive colonizations, encouraging resistance, reviving progressively forgotten animist practices, or restoring the dignity of the disappeared: Lav Diaz’s frescoes stand against silence, amnesia and repression.

Lav Diaz was born in 1958 on the island of Mindanao, Philippines. He has directed numerous feature films, several of which have won awards at the Venice (Death in the Land of Encantos in 2007, Melancholia in 2008; The Woman Who Left in 2016 and Genus pan in 2020), Berlin (A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery in 2016) and Locarno (From What Is Before in 2014) festivals.
The book Lav Diaz : Faire face will be published on May 13, 2022 by Post-Editions, with the support of HEAD-Geneva, and will be inaugurated on May 19, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Cinémas du Grütli (Geneva), followed by the screening of Lav Diaz’s film Season of the Devil (3h53 min, presented in international competition at the Berlinale in 2018).
