HEAD at GIFF : Programs around Alain Tanner

HEAD - Geneva is proud to reinforce its partnership with GIFF, by partnering on several events of the next edition of the Geneva festival - in particular on programs around Alain Tanner, with an unpublished conference by researcher Domenico Lucchini and a series of documentary portraits around the emblematic director of the Group5.

After having had the honor of conducting interviews with the filmmaker, six students from the editing department of the HEAD - Geneva were able to produce six portraits that trace the history of Alain Tanner’s films.

6 X Alain Tanner

Initiated by Nicolas Wadimoff (head of the Cinema Department) and followed by Olivier Zuchuat (teacher in the Cinema Department), this workshop gave the students of the Cinema Department the opportunity to immerse themselves in Alain Tanner’s filmography and then to ask him questions about his work. During the interviews with the filmmaker, Nicolas Wadimoff simply passed on a dialogue between Alain Tanner and the students. This sound material, combined with images from Tanner’s films and some of his writings, gave rise to six short films made by the students in the editing option, like so many glimpses into the filmmaker’s work and the themes that run through it.

This collection of short films was made with the collaboration of the Association Alain Tanner (AAT) which has been working since 2017 to digitize all of the filmmaker’s films in order to make them accessible again.

Screening of Alain Tanner’s film portraits by the students of the editing option on Friday, November 12 at 5:00 pm at the Théâtre Saint-Gervais, just before Domenico Lucchini’s conference.

Conference The cinema of Alain Tanner between realism and utopia

As part of the programs around Alain Tanner, the researcher Domenico Lucchini (director of the CISA) will give a lecture on Friday, November 12 at 17:45 on the work of Alain Tanner to whom he dedicated a book that reviews and analyzes his work.

Tanner’s films reveal the presence of a push towards a hypothesis of change of difference of a dream of the impossible. It is a question of seeing in reality and in fiction which utopia is still possible, which images of vitality remain in both an existing and an imaginary world that seems to have devoured itself with a growing and destructive voracity. In the oscillation between vision of reality and utopian journey, behavioral analysis and ecstatic escape, Tanner’s cinema has addressed the theme of difference, sowing doubt through continuous intellectual provocation and the stylistic code of deconstruction and cinematic unveiling. The conference constitutes an overview of the articulated political/poetic mosaic of Tanner’s cinema and his “wandering” characters.
