Rui Xavier, born in 1974, studied audiovisual communication at the Instituto Politécnico in Porto until 1995 and also photo journalism at the University of Wales in Cardiff until 1997. After graduating he worked as a freelance photographer in England and Portugal and started the photographers collective Kameraphoto. At the same time, he became more and more interested in film making and founded Ricochete Films. Since 2005 he as worked has a film maker and cinematographer. His debut film The Surface received a Special Mention of the Jury at the 58th Berlinale in 2008. From 2010 Rui Xavier is a resident visual artist at Atelier Concorde. He lives and works in Lisbon.
