Biography

Director

Alice Diop

Born in 1979 in Aulnay-sous-Bois, France, Alice Diop fell into documentaries through no fault of her own. It was a happy encounter with a documentary by Eliane de Latour that made her realize the power of the messages that can be conveyed in documentaries, and the possibility of combining a sociological perspective with cinematic treatment. Alice is interested in those we don’t see, she tells the story of cultural diversity. For Alice Diop, making a good documentary means telling intelligent stories using an artistic and human bias. Fighting preconceived ideas to move society forward.

After obtaining a Master’s degree in History at La Sorbonne Paris 1 and a DESS (post-graduate diploma) in visual sociology, Alice Diop joined the Fémis documentary workshop.

Since 2005, she has been directing creative documentaries broadcast on the Arte, France 5 and Planète channels, and selected for numerous international festivals. She has won awards at Cinéma du Réel, the Créteil Women’s Film Festival and the Brive Film Festival…

In 2022, she directed her first feature film, Saint Omer. The film won two awards at the 79th Venice Film Festival: the Grand Jury Prize and the First Film Prize. Saint Omer has been selected to represent France at the 2023 International Academy Awards.
